The Digital Content Creation Class has started to explore the concepts of Creation and Consumption. Students discussed a quote by Dr. Mitchell Resnick (MIT Professor and creator of Scratch)
"We wouldn’t consider someone literate if they could read but couldn’t write. Are we literate if we consume content online, but don’t produce?"
Here is what some of the students had to say...

"This quote means we should not be calling ourselves creative if we don't create. I agree with this quote because we in this day in age have many different types of technology. We tend to not think about how much we consume. We have very talented minds. We should do more with them." "I agree with this claim because if you don't produce then you aren't "literate with computers and technology" and if less people create and more start to consume, then there won't be as much more digital content available." "I think it's not right to label someone illiterate, based on the fact that they can't do one of the factors that a "literate" individual can. On a different note, I see myself as a 50/50 creator and consumer or just about. I take in a lot of information online, but I also produce a lot of content. Granted, most of the stuff I create is more of entertainment, but I am still putting stuff out there." |
"I agree with this claim. However I don't think it matters that everybody consumes and produces. Since a lot of people look at the same things online there doesn't have to be one producer for every consumer. I only consume and I think that is fine." "I disagree with your statement. The world is becoming more and more technology based and I realize this, but everyone is starting to forget the basic fundamentals of learning. None of us would be where we are now if we didn't know how to read and write. Consuming and creating online is a totally different idea. You need to know how to read and write in order to even consider beginning to create content." "I agree with this claim. However I don't think it matters that everybody consumes and produces.
